My Losses

In 2016, I lost 5 people who defined me. And, no – it wasn’t a one-time tragic bus accident. These deaths dripped over the longest year of my life. The first was unexpected, when that March my children’s father died. Although we hadn’t been together in years, we were close. His death was a sudden, devastating blow that shook the foundation of my life.

I was assaulted by three additional deaths in the midst of grieving this monumental loss five months later: My mother, aunt, and partner. To compound these losses another five months after these tragedies, my father died. Two of these five deaths were cancer-related. Just as I was pulling my life together, in 2017, I experienced another devastating loss to cancer: my right breast.

I hadn’t even recovered from the other losses when I received my own diagnosis. Needless to say, grief was even harder at this point. Those who passed away the year before were my bedrocks of support, and none of them were “here”. In addition to the emotional devastation, my body went through the ringer, undergoing three surgeries in five months. And, as you can probably imagine, I experienced a very, very “dark night of the soul”. Fast forward to 2018…

My Wins

In 2018, I secured a scholarship for my son at a highly reputed private school for children with unique opportunities. It is a nurturing, empowering, and results-oriented learning environment that prepares them for living a passion-filled life, and boasts a teacher: student ratio of 1:7. Keep in mind that as a self-employed single mother dealing with a life-threatening illness, 2017 was not a financially groundbreaking year. My income was practically non-existent, so this was a huge blessing from the Universe. I had no idea that a year of being broke could be so beneficial.

I also opened Curio, Craft & Conjure - a boutique botanica honoring magickal traditions. Just so you know, this was not some life-long dream that I’d been quietly saving and working toward.
