I look and feel more fit and healthy, inside and out, than I did when I was 20. How is this possible? Well, I used to be a gym rat. I did cardio, running, weights, and then I switched to yoga. For yearsI did both for hours a day, most days a week. I plateaued, then got fatigued, bloated, and started to feel my joints hurting, and even if I worked harder or longer, I wasn't seeing better results anymore.
The HIIT I learned in gym classes was really high impact, and the anatomy geek in me was shocked at how much unnecessary pressure the moves put on the knees, wrists, lower back, and shoulder joints. I wondered if I could get all the great benefits of HIIT: supercharged fat and calorie burn for up to 48 hours after just a few minutes of exercise, and defined, strong muscles, without the joint wear and tear. I brought in my decades of yoga and anatomy knowledge and designed HIIT moves based on yoga poses that provide you with all the best results way more safely. I added targeted yoga flow sequences to warm-up and cool-down the HIIT workouts, since yoga gives you endurance-based strength, balance, and whole-body detox.
HIIT does what yoga can't: cross-trains your fitness, amps up your heart rate/cardio system for optimized oxygen processing and fat burn, and activates fast-twitch muscle fibers (what tones, sculpts and defines your body). Yoga is a perfect compliment to HIIT, since it targets slow-twitch muscle fibers to keep you endurance-based strong, and it gives you cleansing and flexibility to aid in your HIIT power and transformation.
